Kutani ceramics were born in the beginning of the Edo period in the village of Kutani, which belonged to the Daishoji clan. The kilns were closed after about 50 years of production, but in the last part of the Edo period production was revived. Many workshops developed their advanced techniques through competition with each other.
With the start of the Meiji period, these ceramics were exported abroad in large quantities and the name "Kutani" became renouned across the world.
