ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Jordan Scott’s stamp pieces are painstakingly assembled from thousands of canceled postage stamps. Scott is influenced by Carl Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious and the interconnectedness of the universe and its correspondence to several schools of eastern thought and mysticism. The postage stamp pattern fields are Scott’s interpretation and reinvention of mandalas, or meditative microcosms. Previously used and canceled stamps, by their very nature, are richly evocative. The different types of cancellation marks and other imperfections beg questions of origination, destination, content, and the identity of the senders and receivers. When viewed from a distance, Scott’s works appear as if they might be fabric or textile in nature, and as one moves closer the composition of thousands of individual paper elements becomes clear. Scott's work is both emotionally nostalgic and visually vibrant with geometric patterns of color and text.
